The Day of The Deceased EL DIA DE LOS DIFUNTOS

On Saturday, October 28, come celebrate the ancient Spanish tradition of El Dia de los Difuntos (“The Day of the Deceased”), when friends and family commemorate and joyfully honor the memory of their loved ones who have died. From 11AM to 3PM, at the Tolomato Cemetery, the TCPA and FLH will discuss and explain the historic customs associated with this traditional holiday and still used by Hispanic cultures to prepare for All Souls Day. FLH volunteers will portray some of the famous Floridians who are laid to rest in the Tolomato Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries in the continental United States. In addition, FLH volunteers will present the traditional Spanish Marcha de la Santa Compaña (“The March of the Holy Company”), a night-time, torch-lit procession through downtown St. Augustine, with historical reenactors representing the spirits of “the Noble and Loyal City’s” citizens over the past 450 years. At 7:00PM, the March of the Holy Company will begin at the south end of St. George Street, by the Plaza de la Constitucion and the Cathedral-Basilica of St. Augustine, and process north up St. George Street to the City Gates. The public is encouraged to join in the procession and march behind the Faithful Dead as they walk through St. Augustine’s historic district before returning to the Tolomato Cemetery. There, the Event will conclude with a short, candle-lit production of Don Bernardo de Quirós’ classical Spanish play, El Muerto (“The Dead”), depicting the triumph of love over death. The Tolomato Cemetery is located at 14 Cordova Street, in St. Augustine, FL. Admisssion is free donations are much appreciated and go toward the preservation of the tolomato cemetary.
