Journey: 450 Years of the African American Experience
Date: 1/20 - 07/20   click here for website

The year 2014 is the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, an anniversary that is recognized and commemorated nationally and internationally. Journey: 450 Years of the African-American Experience showcases the important role African-Americans played in the historical and cultural development of America.
The birth of the African-American experience took place in St. Augustine. The first freed Black settlement was established here; the Emancipation Proclamation was read here; on the very streets that were laid down in 1573 by the Spanish Crown marched Civil Rights activists – nearly four centuries later – calling for the fundamental rights our country mandates.
This state-of-the-art exhibition features authentic objects, original documents, powerful photographs and interactive elements that depict the journey African-Americans experienced from our country’s beginnings until today. The exhibition anchors a citywide passport program that connects visitors, residents and students to important African-American historical sites, exhibitions and programs throughout St. Augustine and St. Johns County.
The St. Augustine 450th Commemoration partnered with local and national organizations to present the true and accurate story of African-Americans and their important cultural contributions

St. Augustine Celtic Festival
Date: 3/7 - 3/09   click here for website

The sounds of the ancient Celtic peoples of Scotland and Ireland are as alive today as ever at the St. Augustine Celtic Music Festival, March 7, 8 & 9, 2014 at Francis Field on Castillo Drive. Find the Celt in you as you take in the sights, sounds and tastes of centuries of European history. Celtic clans from around the world show their ancestral pride, Highland games athletes demonstrate their mind-boggling strength, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade marches through the streets of the Oldest City’s Historic District, and vendors offer up Celtic cuisine and hand-made crafts.

But the hands-down favorite of the St. Augustine Celtic festival is the music. Scottish and Irish bands playing both traditional tunes and modernized renditions of the ancient Celtic music appear live on stage throughout the two-day festival - arguably the best collaboration of Celtic artists assembled in the United States. We’re talking Scots-born Albannach and Ireland’s Dublin City Ramblers just to name a few, attracting fans from throughout Florida and Georgia, Savannah to St. Augustine, Orlando and The Villages.

St. Patrick's day parade
Date: 3/8 - 3/08   click here for website

Carriage Way Bed and Breakfast is located in the heart of historic downtown St. Augustine. The luck o' the Irish be with you at the St. Augustine St. Patrick's Day Parade, an annual celebration of the Emerald Isle's most revered saint. Lads and lasses from throughout Georgia and Florida, Savannah to Sarasota and beyond converge upon the Ancient City each year, donning their best greens. Did you know that the wearin' o' the green was outlawed in the 18th century England. Seen as a form of rebellion, wearing of shamrocks was a crime punishable by hanging. Irish folklore holds that St. Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Christian doctrine of the Trinity to Irish polytheists. Patrick was born into a wealthy family and kidnapped from Roman Britain by Irish raiders in the fourth century. He eventually escaped back home, but returned in 432 to help Christianize Ireland. Today, St. Patricks Day parades are celebrated around the world - this one is a favorite part of the annual St. Augustine Celtic Festival, March 8, 2014 at 10 a.m.

Come stay with us at Carriage Way Bed and Breakfast and enjoy a front row seat to the parade from one of our 2 beautiful verandas.
