Journey: 450 Years of the African American Experience

The year 2014 is the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, an anniversary that is recognized and commemorated nationally and internationally. Journey: 450 Years of the African-American Experience showcases the important role African-Americans played in the historical and cultural development of America.
The birth of the African-American experience took place in St. Augustine. The first freed Black settlement was established here; the Emancipation Proclamation was read here; on the very streets that were laid down in 1573 by the Spanish Crown marched Civil Rights activists – nearly four centuries later – calling for the fundamental rights our country mandates.
This state-of-the-art exhibition features authentic objects, original documents, powerful photographs and interactive elements that depict the journey African-Americans experienced from our country’s beginnings until today. The exhibition anchors a citywide passport program that connects visitors, residents and students to important African-American historical sites, exhibitions and programs throughout St. Augustine and St. Johns County.

Why: The story of African-Americans mirrors the history of St. Augustine, from the clash of Old and New World cultures and the struggle for European control to the growth of colonies on the backs of slaves and the unending, centuries-long fight for freedom. St. Augustine has been part of America since its beginnings, and African-Americans have played a key role in the birth of this nation.

Flagler College Tours

Take a tour of Flagler College that highlights the architectural heritage of the former Hotel Ponce de Leon. Built by millionaire developer, Henry Flagler, in 1888, the hotel is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture and houses the largest collection of in use Louis Comfort Tiffany stained glass windows. Located at 74 King Street, tours depart from the Rotunda at the top of each hour between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Admission is $10.00 for adults, $1.00 for children, and free to St. Johns County Residents.

El Galeon Tour

Tour a full-sized replica of a 17th century Spanish galleon. Docked at the St. Augustine City Marina, the Andalucia is an exact replica of the famous galleons that played such an important role in the creation and maintenance of the Spanish Empire. Built in Spain, it is similar to the galleon that brought Pedro Menendez to Florida where he founded St. Augustine in 1565. The ship is available for tours Monday - Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturady & Sunday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $15 for adult; $8 for youth. The Players Championship Golf Tournament

Over 415 acres in the Florida swampland, the course contains narrow fairways lined with hazards like marshes and "waste bunkers," dozens of deep "pot bunkers," strategically placed to catch even a slightly misplaced shot; thick rough that features craters and mounds; tall, shot-obstructing palm trees; and rock-hard, lightning-fast greens. With $9.5 million dollars in prize money on the line, this is one of the biggest tournaments in golf. The 17th hole at TPC, commonly referred to as "the island hole" is one of the most daunting holes on any golf course. HAWKE, The Humane Association of Wildlife Care & Education, a 501 (3) not-for-profit charity that rescues and rehabilitates orphaned wild birds, mammals and reptiles, announces the 19th annual "Dine on the Wild Side" fund-raising dinner will be held at The St. Augustine Alligator Farm on Saturday evening, May 11th, 2013. The Alligator Farm and Zoological Park (www.alligatorfarm.com) sponsors this popular event every year for HAWKE.

Enjoy a wild evening while supporting a great cause at the St. Augustine alligator farm on Anastasia island, just 10 minutes from Carriage Way Bed and Breakfast.

Schooner Freedom Mothers Day Sail

Celebrate Mother's Special Day with a cruise aboard St. Augustine's premier tall ship, the Schooner Freedom. The 2-hour day sail on the Matanzas River casts off at 12:15 p.m and the Sunset Sail departs at 6:15 p.m. - both from the City Marina. The rate for the day sail is $35 adults, $25 for kids 2-12; the Sunset Sail is $45 per person. Pack a picnic or bring desert. First Coast Opera Presents "A Gershwin Evening"

The final production of the 2013-2014 First Coast Opera Season will be "A Gershwin Evening", a salute to George and Ira Gershwin.

Songs by these influential composers will be sung by professional opera singers, with excerpts ranging from "Porgy and Bess" to "Someone to Watch Over Me". Not to be missed is our pianist, Curtis Powell, performing "Rhapsody In Blue".

This concert is part of the week long Romanza Festivale, a cultural festival to bring awareness of the variety of arts and culture in the Nation's Oldest City.

Casino Night hosted by Cindy Williams and Eddie Mekka of television’s Laverne & Shirley

Cindy Williams and Eddie Mekka of television’s Laverne & Shirley will host Casino night at Treasury on the Plaza. This is a fundraiser supporting Ayla's Acre's no kill animal rescue.

Tegan and Sara in concert

The Ponte Vedra Concert Hall hosts Tegan and Sara and the "Let's Make Things Physical Tour" including Lucius, and The Countneys at 8 p.m. (doors open 7 p.m.). Changing of the Guard Ceremony

At 6:30 p.m., St. Augustine's Spanish Garrison conducts a 1740 Changing of the Guard Ceremony in the city's Plaza de la Constitucion. The event begins at 5:30 p.m., with two groups of soldiers marching from the Spanish Bakery -- one heads north on St. George Street to the City Gate and the other group comes south on the street to the Governor's House where they will demonstrate Spanish military arts and explain the purpose of the Changing of the Guard. At 6:15 p.m., after greeting the public at the City Gate, the second group of soldiers march down St. George Street to join their comrades at the Governor's House where the Changing of the Guard, complete with a volley of musketry, will be performed. The Garrison will then march back to the Spanish Bakery. St. George St., and Governor's House on the Plaza, St. Augustine.
