Make wine not war? Orrrr make war WITH wine! The Battalla de Vino is an event where the participants fight with water guns filled with wine! This Spanish tradition dates back 400 years ago and is still going strong to this day (especially in St. Augustine!) The battlegrounds will be the Mission Nombre de Dios on Saturday, September 10, 2016. An organized “team event” will be held from 4:00 to 4:15 P.M. each team will buy in at $100 and the winner (the one with the whitest clothes) will be awarded $500 to go to their charity of choice. The following competition will be open for individuals who just want to have fun and get soaked in wine or soak other people with wine. The individual competition may be one of the biggest wine fights in America, so make history! Each participant will receive keepsake protective sunglasses as well as the use of a wine squirter. Tickets for individual participation in the Grand Batalla de Vino are $10 in advance and $20 at the door (space permitting).
This event is in collaboration with the Spanish Wine Festival and was created to raise funds for Catholic Charities – St. Augustine Regional Offices, K9s United, and Fresh Starts in the Culinary Arts program sponsored by First Coast Technical College and St. Augustine’s St. Francis House.
