Ready for a different kind of holiday celebration? This Winter Solstice, watch the sun rise over the Intracoastal Waterway. There is no more beautiful setting for beginning the shortest day of the year.
Washington Oaks Gardens State Park presents a Winter Solstice Celebration on Wednesday, December 21, 2016. Everyone is invited to come watch the light come up over the Intracoastal Waterway on the first day of the solar new year.
Winter solstice celebrations have been an important part of human culture for many centuries. Park Ranger Joe Woodbury will share his knowledge of the myths and legends that surround the winter solstice, and will provide guidance in tracking the movement of the sun throughout the year.
Participants will meet in the parking lot of Washington Oaks Garden State Park at 6:45 AM. Hot coffee will be provided. This program is included with the park entry fee of $5 per vehicle.
So here’s the plan: You spend the night before at Carriage Way Bed & Breakfast. Spend the evening strolling around town, enjoying the Nights of Lights. Have a fantastic meal at one of St Augustine’s local restaurants, then come back to Carriage Way. Stay in, say, the Topaz room, and snuggle up in your four-poster cherry bed with pillow-top mattress for the night.
In the morning, hop into the brand new travertine and granite walk-in shower with rainhead then go honor the Solstice. Afterwards, come on back to Carriage Way for a celebratory breakfast.
