Where the River Meets the Sea

The River to Sea Preserve

Take a walk in the woods — and end up at the ocean.  On Wednesday, December 21, the GTM Research Reserve will hold a guided trail walk in Marineland at the River-to-Sea Preserve.

A guide will lead you on a trail through the coastal woodlands, where oak scrub and hardwood trees rise above the marsh.  See mangroves growing along the Intracoastal waterway.  See lush Florida plant life, seasonal blooms, and trees dripping with Spanish moss. Hear about the American Indians who once lived in the woods, and how the flora supplied them with food and medicine.

Your guide will also point out the effects of Hurricane Matthew on the environment.  It is a rare opportunity to experience a rapidly disappearing maritime ecosystem.

The River-to-Sea Preserve is 90 acres of protected land that stretches from the river east across A1A to the ocean.  Throughout the year it offers public access to the beach, offers walking trails, nature vistas, a canoe and kayak launch and ecological education opportunities.

The guided walk goes from 9:00 – 10:30 AM and is free and open to the public.  Your guide will meet you in the parking lot, just south of the town of Marineland.  Call 904-823-4500 for more information.

Afterwards, wind your way up gorgeous A1A, through beautiful downtown St Augustine and over to Carriage Way Bed & Breakfast.  We are right in the heart of the Historic District, near all the shops and restaurants — and we have private parking! Drop off your car, check into your room, and go explore the town.  Experience living history at the Colonial Quarter, eat dinner on the patio at Casa Maya, and spend your evening marveling at the Nights of Lights.

After a day spent outdoors, settle in at Carriage Way.   The Tourmaline room, for example, has an electric fireplace, a cherrywood bed with a pillowtop mattress, and a rain head shower.  Or if you haven’t had enough of the great outdoors, we have a veranda that you simply must be introduced to.  Sit on the swing, snuggle up to a cup of hot cocoa, and enjoy the night air.  We can keep you happy inside or out at Carriage Way Bed & Breakfast.
