It’s Christmas in the subtropics, where we celebrate the holidays but can still grow our own floral decorations. On December 3, the St Augustine Garden Club invites you into seven local homes that they have decorated for the season. The Christmas Tour of Homes has been a popular annual tradition in this town for 49 years. This year’s theme is “Christmas in the Flagler Era.”
Everything from roses to fresh fruit becomes ornamentation in the hands of the hundreds of Garden Club members. The specially selected houses date from the 1800s, and the architecture will contribute to the charm of the event. The displays are a feast for the senses – the colors and decor will please your eyes, and fresh flowers, pine boughs and Christmas potpourri will delight your sense of smell.
And your taste buds will not be neglected – your ticket also gives you admission to the Afternoon Tea, which features thousands of homemade cookies. (Literally. Thousands of cookies.) You’ll also have the opportunity to shop at the Boutique, which will feature gifts made by Garden Club members. It is a walking tour, but Old Town Trolley will be offering complimentary transportation between houses and to the Visitors Center Parking Garage.
Afterwards, we’d like to invite you into an eighth house – a lovely Victorian dating from the 1880s. It, too, will be decorated for the holidays. And charming? Hoo boy.
Also, you’ll be pleased to know, we have cookies.
