See the Monthly Changing of the Guard in St. Augustine, FL
On the last Saturday of most months, the Historic Florida Militia Garrison presents the Changing of the Guard, a historical reenactment of the 1740’s heightened military readiness. At this time in history, the war between England and France (The War of Jenkin’s Ear) was in full effect and the St. Augustine Garrison was on guard all day and all night at the Governor’s residence (48 King Street). Each militia personnel carried a locked and loaded musket, ready to shoot trespassers at any moment. At the conclusion of each post, the retiring Garrison needed to unload their muskets and so a firing drill was performed. You are invited to this Saturday, April 30th, 2016’s Changing of the Guard to witness a historical reenactment in the Nation’s Oldest City, St. Augustine at the Plaza de la Constitution. After the Changing of the Guard ceremony, walk with the militia to the Taberna del Caballo (37 St. George Street) for an authentic 18th century Spanish dining experience. The reenactment will begin at 5:45pm and will end at the Taberna around 7:00pm.
