Society put her in a box, so she hatched a cold-blooded plot to further her goals. She is Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, and she is onstage at St Augustine’s own Limelight Theatre.
Does getting married mean giving up your own desires? Hedda doesn’t believe so, despite living in the nineteenth century. This literary and dramatic classic is a tale of misaligned affections, naked ambition, and dramatic death.
Hedda Gabler runs Thursdays through Sundays from January 27 to February 19. The Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening performances are at 7:30. The Sunday performances are 2:00 matinees. Tickets are $26.
This adaptation of Hedda Gabler, by Mark O’Rowe, premiered in 2015 in Dublin, Ireland. It has never been performed by a community theater group, and the Limelight production is also its Florida premiere. Which makes it the Irish version of a Norwegian play in America’s oldest city.
The Limelight Theatre has been a St Augustine institution for 25 years. This nonprofit organization stages seven shows each season and offers year-round theater education for children and adults.
After a night at the theater, come back to Carriage Way Bed & Breakfast. The Silver Room is a sweet room in our secluded cottage. There’s a back porch perfect for relaxing with a cup of coffee and something to read. The queen-size four-poster bed has a pillow-top mattress and luxurious bedding, and the walk-in shower has a rain head shower with body sprays.
In the morning you’ll have your breakfast in the parlor of the main house, and it will be scrumptious: decadent entree, protein, fresh-cut fruit and a sweet baked good, always different from the day before. The parlor is available to you at any time — stop by throughout your stay for a glass of wine or mug of tea. Play board games on the couch or sit outside and people-watch from the veranda. And of course, you are only steps away from the rest of the Historic District, with its museums, historic homes, and points of interest.
There are so many ways to get your culture fix in St Augustine. When you stay at Carriage Way Bed & Breakfast, you’ll be doing it in comfort.
