Time Capsule Discovered During Renovations of the Cathedral Basilica

In preparation for Saint Augustine’s 450th Anniversary Celebrations taking place September 2015, the Cathedral Basilica is undergoing some extensive renovations. It was during these renovations where workers discovered a time capsule which was buried almost fifty years ago in the main altar of the Parish. In 1966, the year the church was last renovated, the lead contractor placed in the time capsule medallions, old newspapers, a coin blessed by the Pope Paul VI and a photo of the previous pastor, Monsignor John Burns, at the Vatican.  Lastly, a letter written by the lead contractor addressed to the future contractors where he states that he “hopes the next contractor has as much fun as he did renovating the church.”

The Cathedral is currently closed to the public while the final stages of the $4 million renovation project are being completed.  It is expected that the doors will open in time for Mass on Easter 2015.  For more information on the Cathedral Basilica and the renovation project please see their website: thefirstparish.org.
